Being Accountable For Our Words

I have a friend who writes worship songs. The words that he has written have touched my life. I was talking to him one day and he shared a little of the responsibility he felt as a song-writer in our church. He explained to me that when he wrote a song declaring God's greatness and priority in his life, and he put his name to that song, there was a responsibility for him to live his life in accordance with those words. How he could write lyrics such as "You're everything to me" if God was not, in fact, everything to him.

This conversation has stayed with me since that day. As I think about my own giftings I believe that this responsibility equally applies to Christian blogging, or in fact any type of writing. Over the last twelve months, I have written about some challenging subjects such as trusting in God's faithfulness, having faith in God during difficult times, Worshiping God with our daily life and compassion. Over the course of those twelve months I have found myself being tested on a number of these things. In all honesty, I haven't always passed the test.

As I look back on my writings, I can see God's hand at work, as he was encouraging me and teaching me things. We are not perfect and we will not always get it right, but with the Holy Spirit's help I think it would be beneficial to all who consider ourselves 'Christian bloggers' to be aware of the accountability we need to hold ourselves to when we put our name to an article. Anything less is hypocrisy. Pretty challenging huh.

    Adam,

All Christians should be cognizant of their actions as we are called to "re-present" Christ to the world. As a Christian, a minister, and a pastor's wife I understand that my actions and reactions, my love and integrity or lack thereof affects the lives of family, friends, and fellow worshippers probably more than I know. Because I'm as human as anyone, sometimes (maybe even often) I fall short of where I should be and thank God the Holy Spirit is within to convict me and encourage me to do better, although I must also take responsibility to encourage myself in the direction of Christ-likeness.

I agree with you that as a Christian author ("Stepping into the Light: You're a Christian, what now?") and blogger (website of the same name) I now stand before a wider public than before and this responsibility has made me more acutely aware of how my life represents the light of Jesus to the world.

Thank you, Adam, for the reminder.

I wanted to thank you for stopping by my site and commenting.

It's funny you should mention that song. Hearing it for the first time is what first made me start feeling this way and it was further confirmed as time passed. In fact, if you look at the post published just after the one you commented on, I commented that Stained-Glass Masquerade was going to be the "theme song," if you will, of the effort.

I will publish today's post as soon as I get a chance and I would love to have you participate.

Thanks again for stopping by! I'm going to look around your site for a while now. =)
